Help! I Need Somebody

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (John 14:26, NIV)

My children love junk food, if they would have the opportunity their diets would consist of chocolate, pizza, chips, and of course gummies. I recall my third child reminding me “Dad it’s made with real fruit” when he asked for his third pack of gummies. As a parent, I want the very best for my children and understand that eating this dietary menu will be unhealthy and in excess would end up in them getting sick.
Jesus speaking to the disciples with a sincere heart prior to the crucifixion, reminds them of his relationship with the Father. He reminds them that the love for God and their love for one another would help them overcome the difficulties that they would soon be confronted with. To reassure them that neither he nor God would leave them orphaned he promised them the Counselor, the Holy Spirit. He wanted to give them a resource that would be good for a lifetime of service and support. This Spirit would reside in them and would bring guidance to them and would remind them of all of God’s teachings.
If we are sick we go to the doctor, if we are feeling emotionally overwhelmed we seek the expertise of a counselor or psychologist. The Human Services Field is filled with experts and many of them do amazing work. We can at times become very dependent on these supports. God desires for us to seek him and be dependent on Him. The Holy Spirit’s purpose is to help give counsel, guidance, strength and at times foresight. As a parent, I desire the best for my children, and God desires even more for us than we can really comprehend. He knew that we would feel limited and down at times. In his infinite knowledge he gave us his Holy Spirit, the Counselor that is available to us all the time.
“Father God, in Jesus name I ask you to help me to rely on your Spirit more, teach me your ways and help me to make decisions that are led by your direction today.” Amen. -DR
