“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us ….” (Hebrews 12:1)
All-Star season marks the end of another Little League season. It is exciting to see a child make it to the “All Star Team” they get so excited about being chosen for this special team. I find it also interesting to see parents get so excited when their child is chosen. Parents will commit to extra practices, purchase more gear and become more passionate about the child’s play.
This season I watched parents with joy and excitement watch their children play ball. There was cheering at times due to great competition, sadness and times due to defeat and victory at the close of many games. I found myself even focusing specifically on my child and cheering them on, advocating and calling out their name just to let them know that we were there to cheer him on no matter what.
When I ponder these thoughts I reflect upon the opening of Hebrews 12:1. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses.” There are times in life when we feel alone and in need of support and we can’t seem to find people to cheer us on. . I like to think that God is always cheering us on and that the witnesses of years past are cheering us on as well. When I think of witnesses from years past that lived, persevered, and thrived during their season on this earth it brings peace, strength and encouragement. When I see that they trusted in God and made it through in their journey it instills hope. It helps me realize that if I pursue God as they did I also can overcome and have hope. If I throw off the mindsets, prejudices, regrets and cynicism. If I free myself from the things that bog me down, the sin and poor choices that tangle me up. I can begin to run with purpose and I can be victories.
Today, remember God is on your side, he is passionately in love with you. He wants the best for you and accepts you as you are. He desires relationship with you and He wants you to know Him. Take time today to think about the witnesses of old and ask God how their story can bring strength to you today. Focus not on their imperfections but focus on times when you know God was evident in their lives and brought them through their season of struggle to a place of contentment and victory. Be Blessed in Christ today.
